<incom> U.N. telecom not eying Internet control

I think the UN is way too weak, what with the scandals
and the new SG who's known in Korea as 'the slippery
eel' for his ability to say little when questioned.

As Bob Kahn mentioned in his talk the other night,
leaving control with Dept. of Commerce was preferable
to  ceding to govts/ITU or to (mainly) U.S. telecomms
firms.

I met Mr. Toure in 2000 at the ITU grand event in Rio.
I was pleased to know he was upset by the outrageous
cost of the so-called multipurpurpose community 
telecenter that was built in Timbuktu with ITU, Swiss
and other money. I thought he had a sensible apporoach
to ICT development, but it was from a brief encounter.
