Because of interdependencies, the observer's role is never passive or  
neutral.  There are no lurkers.  I have always believed that, if I am  
differently informed as a consequence of experiencing the stories in  
a social network (even as pared down a network as a list), then that  
makes a difference in the other social networks I inhabit.  When  
there's a difference that makes a difference in the social particle -  
me - that makes waves in the social net.
