y taller sobre Nuevos Medios y Transformacion Social a celebrarse el 3-4 
y 16-17 de diciembre del 2005 en Hong Kong. Esta conferencia, dice Gabi, 
puede ser muy interesante para quienes van a Asia en diciembre a la 
conferencia de OURMedia/NuestrosMedios. La conferencia ofrecera 
traduccion del ingles al cantones y al putonghua, pero 
desafortunadamente nada al espannol.

Los organizadores esperan que a esta conferencia asistan muchas de las 
organizaciones y activistas que estan comenzando a utilizar medios 
independientes en Hong Kong, especialmente para apoyar la resistencia en 
contra de la Organizacion Mundial del Comercio (y todo lo relacionado

Introduction



December 2005 will be a month for both governmental and non-governmental 
gathering in Hong Kong. We expect many independent media will gather in 
Hong Kong to report on the WTO ministerial meeting, as well as the 
anti-WTO NGO forum and demonstration. Independent media in Hong Kong has 
started to flourish in the past few years, after the July 1 
demonstration in year 2002; educators also start to explore new media as 
a mean for civic education or critical pedagogy. We would like to seize 
this international occasion to organize a series of discussion for 
independent media groups from all over the world to share their 
experience in using new media for engaging with the society, and to 
explore potentials for border-crossing cooperation.

Session one:Participatory journalism and independent media movement



This session aims at exploring and sharing the intellectual, social and 
political context for participatory journalism and independent media 
movement. How can independent / internet media transform the society? 
How is the new media form related with the imagination of the boundary 
and social relation of our society ? How can it open up spaces within 
the existing cultural and political spectrum? How does it relate with 
the emergency or transformation of social and political character of 
citizen?

Dan Gillmor, author of WetheMedia, has been actively advocating 
grassroots and participatory journalism, an experienced media worker and 
the founder of Bayophere (a website for blogger journalism) (yet to be

Huang Xun Quian!)!)!)]!)v!)GChief editor of Pot magazine in Taiwan, 
founder of TWIMC and TWblog, teaching in Taiwan She Xin University.

Lee Jong Hoi: President of Chamsaesang (an internet based multi-media in 
S.Korea, specialized at news concerning NGOs sectors). (confirmed)

Session two: Global citizen and new media?



Most of the mainstream media are very limited in cross-border 
perspectives, the so-called international news are mostly about the West 
or highly international relation which is dominated by governmental or 
nationalistic concerns. Many of the new media aim at creating an 
international community among people and they are more aware of the 
communication among non-western world. In this session, we would like to 
share the experience in the initiative for border-crossing dialogue: How 
can the new media facilitate border-crossing dialogue? How to transgress 
language barriers and contextual differences in communication? What are 
the major challenges for such initiatives?

Representative from indymedia network: IMC was formed in 1999 after the 
Seattle anti WTO gathering, up till now, there are more than 100 IMC 
center all over the world, exchanging news on social movement against

Roland Soong: the Author of EastSouthWestNorth, an English blog focusing 
on News from China and Latin America; he is also a contributor of Global 
voice online, a website hosted by Harvard Law School for introducing 
blog from non-western world to English speaking world. (confirmed)



Ohmynews International page: Ohmynews is one of the most successful 
internet media in the world adopting citizen journalism. This year, it 
has launched an international citizen reporter programme for bringing in 
a diversity of international news to S. Korean society. (yet to be

Session three: New media and education



What is the relation between new media and citizen education or critical 
pedagogy? How can we use media to cultivate critical, reflective and 
engaging subject?



Pranjal Tiwari: Z-net representatives in Hong Kong, editor specializing 
in Hong Kong and Chinese News. Z-net is an internet based magazine 
organized by critical intellectual and independent media workers who 
actively introduced non-western perspective for challenging U.S. 
cultural hegemony in order to create a reflective space for the American 
society. (confirmed)



PK Hui: The Master of Cultural Studies programme of Lingnan University 
has been exploring critical media education curriculum in the past few 
years. PK Hui would explain the relation among media and cultural 
studies and education? (confirmed)



Oiwan Lam: In-MediaHK has been actively promoting citizen reporting in 
their web-based media and they have plans to integrate their citizen 
reporting project with critical pedagogy in civic education. (confirmed)



Session four: Internet media in Chinese communities



A critical review on the development of Chinese internet media in the 
past few years, its implications for different Chinese communities and 
potential cooperation among Chinese new media in the future.

in Taiwan, specialized in news concerning social movements, ngos and

Michael Anti: a famous journalists and blogger in China; this year, he 
was being invited by Deutsche Welle to be one of the reviewer for the 
world best news blog award. (yet to be confirmed)



Jack Qiu: professor from the journalism and communication department in 
CUHK, one of the founder for the Chinese internet research network. (yet 
to be confirmed)



Isaac Mao: an advocator for the development of social software in China, 
a major organizer for the Chinese blogger gathering in Shanghai. (yet to 
be confirmed)



Each session would be followed up by a series of questions and comments 
started off by a number of commentators from different sectors: NGOs, 
professional journalists, educators, bloggers, BBS webmasters, etc. (the

Introduction to different forms of alternative media: BBS, internet 
Radio, podcast, blog, etc.

How to organize a blogger / citizen journalism interactive website?

How to organize an internet radio?

How to use podcast?

Apart from the technically know-how, each session would go into the 
pleasure, desires, ethics, self and social imagination that operate in 
each media tool.
